In the novel trash the idea of friendship is demonstrated through the first-person point of view that the story is told.
The story is told through a series of letters, most of which are written by the three friends Raphael, Gardo and Rat.
One example from the novel is when Raphael writes “Gardo was a great friend… he would to anything for me, and I would do the same for him”
As it is a character expressing the mutual friendship he has with Gardo which makes it a reliable piece of evidence. The fact that both boys would do anything for each other represents that their friendship is strong and positive element of their lives.
Through Mulligan’s use of point of view, he has represented the idea of friendship as something positive and strong.
